Title: | [Stephen Smith, a Seventh-day Adventist pioneer] |
Description: | Stephen Smith was a Seventh-Day Adventist pioneer. He was involved with the Advent movement sparked by William Miller's prediction that Jesus Christ would return to earth in October of 1844. In the late 1840's, he became convinced of the need to observe the seventh-day Sabbath as the result of the ministry of Joseph Bates, anotehr SDA pioneer. Smith was a colorful character, and there are several first hand witness accounts of his sharp-tongued temper on several occasions. He was an on-again and off-again Seventh-day Adventist, and fell away from the church for a period of time when he became convinced that a specific date had to be set for the return of Jesus. He did eventually return to the faith in 1858 and remained a faithful member until his death in 1889. One of the last accounts of Smith was that he gave personal testimony to the writings of Ellen G. White, who is held to be a prophetess by the SDA church. It was Smith's opinion that White's writings were inspired and accurate and he gave spoken testimony to this fact before a church service near his home in Washington, New Hampshire |
