Title:[Ellen Gould Harmon White at her writing table]
Description:Co-founder of the Seventh-Day Adventist church, Ellen Gould Harmon was born in Gorham, Maine, on November 26, 1827. Along with other members of her family, she accepted the teaching of William Miller that the Lord would return about 1844. Shortly after the Great Disappointment of October 22, 1844 (when Jesus Christ did not return at the expected time), she had the first of many visions. On August 30, 1846, she was married to James White. To them were born four sons: Henry Nichols White, James Edson White, William Clarence White, and John Herbert White. She was a prolific writer on religious topics. At the time of her death she had some twenty-four books in current circulation. She was a frequent contributor to the Review & Herald and other denominational publications. She was also a popular speaker, especially on temperance topics. A few years after the death of her husband, she traveled to Europe, living there from 1885 to 1887. She went to Australia from 1891 to 1900 where among other things she helped found Avondale College. Some time after her return to the United States, she was the prime founder of several other institutions, including what is now called Loma Linda University. She also made several trips across country in her advanced years, the last in 1909 to attend a General Conference session. She died at Elmshaven, her home in St. Helena, California, on July 16, 1915. The engraving from which this copy is made was done in 1878
