Title: | Battle Creek College chimney toppling following the demolition of the 78 year old building |
Description: | The 80-foot chimney which served the Battle Creek College buildings for some 75 years, is shown falling into the basement cavity after workers hacked at its base. A worker can be seen running from the scene just to the left of the base. Bricks will remain in the basement as fill material. With a ground-shaking thud, the 80-foot brick chimney of the razed Battle Creek College building on North Washington avenue crashed into the basement cavity yesterday. Containing enough bricks "to build a good-sized house," the chimney was toppled by workmen of the Southwestern Lumber Co. at 9:35 a.m., as one of the last phases of the job of wrecking the old college property. Foreman John McGuire tipped the big smoke-stack by having his workers hack away at the basement side of the base with sledge and bars. Most of the bricks will lie where they fell in the basement as fill. All that remains to clear the site is the wrecking of a small portion of the college building used as an office by the wrecking firm. |
