Title:[First Congregational Church Quartet as seen in c. 1913]
Description:Edwin Barnes (front, center) was considered to be a musical prodigy at his time, especially on the organ whose father may have been a gifted musician as well according to some sources. He was invited by John Harvey Kellogg to be a student and then a teacher of music. In conjunction with several of his contemporary Seventh-Day Adventists, Barnes founded two different musical groups through the college: The Harmonie Society (co-ed singing troupe) and The Treble Clef (an all female choir group of about 135 members). He went on to perform a number of famous Christian musicals such as Haydn's The Creation and Handel's The Elijah and The Messiah . He toured internationally, especially in his home country of England. He had an honorary Doctor of Music degree conferred upon him by Hillsdale College in Michigan. He also served for two different terms on the Michigan Music Teachers' Association. He is shown here with a quartet from a Congregational Church which he attended after leaving the Seventh-Day Adventist church
