Description:"In response to an appeal by his mother, Ellen G. White, to begin an expanded work among the Black people of the southern United States, James Edson White built this 72 foot river boat in 1874 in Battle Creek, Michigan. Traveling down the Mississippi River, the Morning Star, as the boat was named, docked in Vicksburg and was used as a school to help Blacks learn to read, write, do arithmetic and study the Bible."
